What we will ask you on that first call
So you can think about it now instead of being put on the spot. You do not need to know all of it.
- What happened. a fall, a hospital stay, a diagnosis, or has it just been getting worse?
- What can they still do on their own?
- What have they stopped doing?
- Are they eating?
- How are the nights?
- Do they know you are calling us?
- Who else is involved. siblings, a doctor, a social worker?
- What are you most worried about?
- What do they say about all this?
- Roughly what can the family afford?
What we will not do
- We will not pressure you.
- We will not ask for a deposit.
- We will not send a salesperson.
- We will not put you on a mailing list you did not ask for.
- We will not phone you every week to see if you have decided.
- We will not tell you more is needed than is needed.
Do this to every agency
Six ways to check out any home care agency, including this one.
We would rather you did this properly than took our word for it. Do it to us. Do it to everybody you call.
- 1
Ask for references and then actually ring them.
Everybody asks. Almost nobody calls. Call two.
- 2
Ask exactly what background checks they run, and on whom.
“All our caregivers are screened” is not an answer. Ask which checks, run by whom, and how often they are repeated.
- 3
Ask whether caregivers are employees or contractors.
If they are 1099 contractors, ask who carries the insurance and the workers' comp. because the answer may be you.
- 4
Ask what happens when your caregiver calls in sick at 6am.
The answer tells you everything about the size and the honesty of the operation.
- 5
Ask for the price, on the first call.
Notice who tells you and who deflects. We will tell you.
- 6
Insist they come to the house and meet the person before anything is agreed.
Any agency worth hiring will want to. The ones who do not are filling a slot.
